About the Talk: Breaking the Rules All the Way to Utopia: Radical Discourses on Shabbat In this shiur, we will explore the relationship between Shabbat and taboo, ritual and ecstasy, through classic and not-so-classical texts and readings from the Talmud, Kabbalah, Karl Marx, Emma Goldman, George Bataille, Anais Nin, Karen Barad and more…
About Micki Weinberg: Micki Weinberg is a filmmaker and writer based in Berlin. Born in Los Angeles, he graduated with a Bachelor's degree from the University of California, Berkeley in 2004. He left the states for graduate studies at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, where he focused on intertextuality in ancient Jewish literature. He also studied Talmud at the Mir Yeshiva. Weinberg worked at Goldman Sachs from 2007-2010 in London and Switzerland. Micki has been leading text based study groups in Berlin and other cities since 2011. In 2018 Micki founded SHIUR in Berlin, and the organization has since expanded to different cities in Europe and North America.
About Shiur: SHIUR is a project that brings together, both in real life and digitally, a diverse group of academics, diplomats, artists, scientists, professionals, and others to explore culture and theory through a critical lens.
The word "shiur" in Hebrew can mean “text based lesson” or “measurement” and is related to the Hebrew word sha’ar or “gate.” We like the multiplicity of connotations that SHIUR has, and we are also measuring, assessing, entering gates, and reconfiguring how we interpret our world.
There’s a whole literary-philosophical-artistic-architectural-spiritual heritage that’s just waiting to be re-examined, challenged, and critically interpreted. Through specially curated discourse based experiences in galleries, museums, embassies and other spaces, weekly newsletters and virtual SHIURim with guest presenters, we engage and experience art, architecture, space, text, music, sound, body, mind, theory and whatever else the times offer us.
About Kerem House: Kerem House is a community-led cultural space in the heart of Tel Aviv, organized by young people who wish to create a vibrant Jewish community, for themselves and for their peers.
